Frequently Asked Questions

Questions Concerning Tatami

  • Taking in-person measurements is a key part of the tatami-maker's job that must be done before the tatami can be made. This involves visiting the room in question, taking careful measurements, and then creating tatami that will perfectely fit into that room. It is an essential part of the the tatami-making process.

  • We are frequently asked questions like, "isn't it possible to take the measurements from the room's blueprints?" and "why is it necessary to take measurements in a newly-constructed building?" However, if the tatami is created according the the blueprints of a room, there is a real danger that it may not perfectly fit into the space.
Not all rooms are constructed as perfect rectangles. No matter how skillful the builder, the angle of the room's corners, the shape of the wood used in construction, and other factors may contribute to small deviations from the blueprints. By measuring the room as it exists, we can ensure that the tatami will fit perfectly and without gaps.

  • If the room is not measured before the tatami is made, the tatami may be too large to fit or leave gaps. If ill-fitting tatami is forced into a space, it may cause damage to the rush or warping of the shape of the tatami mats themselves.

  • To ensure the maximum durability and thermal comfort of tatami, it should be laid precisely. There is a specific way to install tatami that will ensure it lies flush and without gaps. After the tatami is laid down, we will conduct an inspection to make sure that there are no gaps or height differences, forming one perfect floor.

  • Ventillate the room and remove as much humidity as possible. Carefully vacuum the tatami in the direction of the rush and wipe it with a dry cloth. Repeat this process 3 or 4 times. If cleaning the facing does not resolve the problem, please contact us for help.

  • ・On days with good weather, open the windows to allow the room to air out, and limit the room's humidity from sources like air conditioners and humidifiers.
・If cleaning with a vacuum, follow the direction of the rush and vaccuum slowly.
・If cleaning with a cloth, a dry cloth is best.
・Continuous exposure to direct sunlight may cause tatami to become damaged or change color.
・Placing carpet on top of tatami may cause damage or allow the growth of mold or mildew.
・Avoid placing any furniture directly against the wall, and allow the tatami underneath to air out regularly.

  • Generally, more expensive tatami can be expected to last longer. When placed in the same environment and recieving the same amount of use, high-value tatami mats will prove to be more durable than cheaper tatami mats. With proper care and maintinence, high value tatami will ultimately be more economical.

  • Our tatami is made-to-order for each of our customers' individual needs, so we are generally unable to accept returns.
